Maximum payloads and lifting heights
In the case of a high-lift truck, the maximum payload and lifting height are directly related to each other, which is why they play an essential role for subsequent use in the company and also for the purchase decision.
Interaction of payload and lifting height
Due to the leverage effect, the operator side must always be heavier than the fork/load side so that the high-lift truck/forklift cannot tip forward. When the load is lifted, a physical phenomenon now occurs: The load's center of gravity moves further out on the fork, resulting in a lower load capacity. Thus, when considering the load capacity in conjunction with the maximum lifting height, it is imperative to note that the load capacity decreases as the lifting height increases in accordance with the physical leverage effect.

In practice, the question thus often arises as to which load can be moved how high with a high-lift truck or pedestrian stacker. A standard lifting height is specified on the nameplate of each device. According to EC Directive 86/663 EEC, high-lift trucks and pedestrian stackers must be able to lift the nominal load to a lifting height of 2500 mm. This must not result in any safety impairments.
The maximum load capacities distributed up to the full lifting height can be taken from the so-called load capacity diagram or load center of gravity diagram. This diagram is attached to the equipment as a separate plate.
Drive types
When it comes to the drive types of high-lift trucks and pedestrian stackers, a distinction can be made between different variants - depending on how heavily the equipment is used in everyday operations and for which tasks it is preferred:
- Hydraulic or manual: Ideal for low and medium payload and lifting ranges and for occasional activities, e.g. loading and unloading trucks.
- Semi-electric: Well suited for more intensive use in an area when only short distances have to be covered, e.g. when stacking palletized goods
- Fully electric: preferable for high operating frequency, e.g. when heavier palletized goods have to be picked from great heights in a short period of time
Structure of the lift mast
As one of the essential assemblies of a high lift truck, the design of the lift mast also defines the maximum lifting height. The following lift mast variants are found on pedestrian stackers and high-lift trucks:
- Simplex mast: single frame - i.e. the overall height of the lifting mast is the maximum possible lifting height.
- Duplex mast: double frame - after the upper end of the outer frame is reached (headroom), an inner frame extends. The lifting height is approximately twice the overall height
- Triplex mast: triple frame - in contrast to the duplex mast, in this variant two inner frames extend during lifting. The lifting height is then approximately three times the overall height.
- Mono-mast: single-column mast placed in the center of the machine. This allows a better view of the loaded goods.
When selecting the device, it is important to consider the respective room heights and clearance heights of the individual areas in terms of overall height and maximum lifting height, so that a smooth flow of logistical tasks is possible and the device remains flexible to use.
